Arbortech Staff Woodworking Competition - My Dog Sambuca By Matthew Cormack

My Dog Sambuca
Created by Matthew Cormack, Arbortech Senior Design Engineer

Novice woodworker? No

Description of your wood art?
A carving of the head of my dog, Sambuca.

Where did you get your inspiration for your wood art piece?
Sambuca himself. He is a very lovely dog and I wanted some kind of keepsake.

What type of wood did you use?
Ghost gum.

What Arbortech tool/s did you use to create this piece?
  • TURBOPlane
  • Power Chisel
  • Woodcarver
  • Contour Sander
What was your process in the creation of this project?
1. Simply clamp the log in a vice and carved it by eye.
2. The TURBOPlane was essential in getting the form right and the tool was more than capable of sculpting the hard wood as my eye followed the shape.

How long did it take for you to complete this project?
It took me 2 hours in total.

Where does this piece reside now?
It is sitting in my office at Arbortech.
